Hina Ningyou are Japanese dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, court people and musicians dressed in the traditional clothes of the court of the Heian period (794-1185). The Hina Ningyou are specially used for Hina Matsuri, the Doll Festival devoted to girls, held March 3 of each year in Japan.
Japanese families expose the dolls during the month of February and quickly put them away once the Hina Matsuri is finished. The superstition is that if left exposed after March 4, the daughter of the house will have a hard time finding a marriage partner.
An exhibition of Hina Matsuri can consist of 1 to 7 platforms of dolls. On the first platforms, which is also the highest, there is the Emperor and Empress. On the second platform there are 3 courtesans. On the third platform are located 5 musicians. On the fourth platform there are two ministers. On the fifth platform we place samurai or aid of the emperor. On the sixth and seventh platforms, we find the imperial furniture with storage furniture on the sixth platform and transport objects such as a palanquin or carriage for the last stage.
