Pretty lacquered chopsicks decorated with a happy cat. Cats, neko in Japanese, are seen as lucky charms. Japanese cats are so well-liked that they even have their own day: 22nd February is the Neko no Hi.
Japanese urushi lacquer is made from the sap of the urushi tree, a tradition dating back to the Jomon period (6000BC).
Laquered objects (Shikki) are sensitive to a direct exposure to sunlight. These products cannot be used in microwaves and cannot be washed in dishwasher. Urushi products should be quickly dried after washing.
